California Tax Refund Calculator
Will you get money back from the Franchise Tax Board or owe? Compare your California tax after credits with what was withheld.
Your California refund is what you paid in (state tax withheld, shown in box 17 of your W-2, plus any estimated payments) minus your California tax after credits. This estimate uses tax year 2025 brackets, the $153 personal and $475 dependent exemption credits, and the renter's credit.
Have your W-2 handy. Box 16 shows California wages and box 17 shows California tax withheld.

How this is calculated
Step 1: California tax. Wages plus other income, minus the California standard deduction, taxed at the 2025 brackets (1% to 12.3%, plus 1% over $1 million).
Step 2: nonrefundable credits. Each filer gets a $153 personal exemption credit, each filer 65+ another $153, and each dependent $475. These shrink at high incomes. If you rented your California home for at least half the year and your income is at or under $53,994 (single) or $107,988 (joint), you also get the renter's credit of $60 or $120. These credits can reduce tax to zero but cannot create a refund by themselves.
Step 3: compare with what you paid. California withholding from your paychecks (W-2 box 17) plus estimated payments, minus the tax left after credits, is your refund. A negative number means you owe.
Not included: the refundable CalEITC, Young Child Tax Credit and Foster Youth Tax Credit (which can add to a refund; see the CalEITC estimator), itemized deductions, other credits, and SDI withholding (SDI is not an income tax, and since 2024 it has no wage cap, so there is no excess-SDI refund).
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I estimate my California tax refund?
Add up the California tax withheld from your paychecks (W-2 box 17) and any estimated payments, then subtract your California tax after credits. If what you paid is more than the tax, the difference is your refund.
How do I check my California refund status?
Use the Franchise Tax Board's "Where's my refund" tool at ftb.ca.gov. You will need your Social Security number, mailing address ZIP code and the exact refund amount from your return.
Why do I owe California taxes this year?
Common reasons are too little withholding (an old DE 4 or W-4), income with no withholding such as gig or freelance work, a second job, or a large bonus. Updating your DE 4 with your employer increases California withholding.
What is the California renter's credit?
A nonrefundable credit of $60 for single filers or $120 for married couples filing jointly if you rented your California home for at least half the year and your income is under the limit ($53,994 single or $107,988 joint for tax year 2025). It reduces tax you owe but is not paid out on its own.
Is my California refund taxable on my federal return?
Only if you itemized deductions on your federal return and deducted state income taxes in the year you overpaid, and the deduction gave you a tax benefit. If you took the federal standard deduction, it is not taxable.
This tool provides an educational estimate of your California return only and is not tax advice. It assumes the standard deduction and does not include refundable credits, itemized deductions or other adjustments. Your actual refund is determined by the return you file with the FTB.
