Your registration fee is mostly the Vehicle License Fee (0.65% of your car's depreciated value) plus a $76 base registration fee and a $34 CHP fee. This estimator covers passenger vehicles — trucks and commercial vehicles also owe a separate weight fee not included here.

How this is calculated

First, your vehicle's depreciated value = purchase price × a depreciation percentage for its age (approximately 100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 20%, 15% for years 1-10, floored at 15% of original value from year 10 onward — a simplified version of the DMV's actual $200-wide valuation bracket schedule).

The Vehicle License Fee is then 0.65% of that depreciated value. Add the flat $76 base registration fee and $34 CHP fee for the total shown.

This estimate excludes local county/district add-on fees (which vary by where you register), the separate weight fee owed by trucks and commercial vehicles, and the additional Road Improvement Fee owed by EVs — all of which would push your actual DMV bill higher than this figure.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the California Vehicle License Fee (VLF) calculated?

The VLF is 0.65% of your vehicle's depreciated market value. The DMV starts from the vehicle's purchase price and depreciates it on a statutory schedule — roughly 100% in year 1, stepping down through the years, floored at 15% of original value from about year 10 onward.

What other fees are part of vehicle registration besides the VLF?

A base registration fee (about $76) and a California Highway Patrol fee (about $34) apply to nearly every vehicle, on top of the VLF. Many vehicles also owe local county/district add-on fees, and trucks/commercial vehicles owe a separate weight fee not included in this estimator.

Does an older car have a lower registration fee?

Generally yes, since the VLF portion shrinks as the vehicle's depreciated value falls each year. The base registration and CHP fees, however, stay roughly flat regardless of vehicle age.

Do electric vehicles pay a different registration fee?

EVs pay the same VLF, base registration, and CHP fee structure as any other vehicle, but also owe an additional annual Road Improvement Fee that gas vehicles don't pay, since EVs don't contribute gas tax to fund road maintenance — this estimator doesn't include that fee.

Is this estimate exact?

No. It's a simplified approximation of the DMV's actual $200-wide valuation bracket and depreciation schedule, and excludes local county/district fees, weight fees for trucks, and the EV road improvement fee. Use the DMV's own online calculator for an exact figure.
