Registration expired? Enter the expiration date and your vehicle license fee to see the penalties the DMV adds to your renewal.
California has no grace period for registration renewal. Paying after the expiration date adds three penalties (Vehicle Code 9554): a registration fee penalty and a CHP fee penalty of $10 each up to 10 days late, rising to $100 each after two years, plus 10% to 160% of your vehicle license fee.

Late Registration Penalties
How this is calculated
| How late | Registration fee penalty | CHP fee penalty | Penalty on license (and weight) fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-10 days | $10 | $10 | 10% |
| 11-30 days | $15 | $15 | 20% |
| 31 days to 1 year | $30 | $30 | 60% |
| More than 1 year to 2 years | $50 | $50 | 80% |
| More than 2 years | $100 | $100 | 160% |
The rules: Vehicle Code 9554 sets the dollar penalties on the registration fee (subd. (b)) and a single penalty on the CHP-related fees (subd. (e)), and the percentage penalty on the vehicle license fee plus any weight fee (subd. (c)). Fees become delinquent after midnight on the expiration date, or 60 days after the DMV sent your renewal notice if that is later (section 9552). Penalties are rounded to the whole dollar (section 9559).
Estimating the license fee: if you don't have the notice, the VLF is 0.65% of the purchase price after the state's depreciation schedule (100%, 90%, 80%, 70%, 60%, 50%, 40%, 30%, 25%, 20%, 15%, then 15%). The DMV uses $200-wide value classes, so its figure can differ slightly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the late fee for California car registration?
It depends on how late you are. The registration fee penalty runs from $10 (10 days or less) to $100 (over two years), with a matching CHP fee penalty, plus 10% to 160% of your vehicle license fee.
Is there a grace period for California registration renewal?
No. Penalties start the day after your registration expires. If the DMV renewal notice reached you late, the fees are not delinquent until 60 days after the DMV notified you, if that date is later.
Why is my late penalty so high?
The biggest part is usually the percentage penalty on the vehicle license fee, which jumps from 20% to 60% once you are more than 30 days late. On a $200 license fee that is $120.
Can I avoid penalties if my car was not driven?
File a Planned Non-Operation (PNO) certification before the registration expires and pay its small filing fee instead of renewing. While the car is on PNO it can't be driven, moved or parked on a public road, and you can renew later without late penalties as long as you do it before using the car again (Vehicle Code 4604).
Are late penalties waived after a repossession?
Yes, in one case: when a lender repossesses a car with renewal fees due, the DMV waives the late penalties if the fees are paid within 60 days of repossession.
