For a single adult (household of 1), the 2026 Medi-Cal income limit is $1,836/month (138% of the Federal Poverty Level). Limits are higher for pregnancy, children, and larger households. Medi-Cal counts MAGI income (roughly your tax return income); some income, such as SSI and child support received, isn't counted.

How this is calculated

Each program you check is compared against DHCS's own published monthly income limit for your household size: adults 19–64 at 138% of the Federal Poverty Level, children 0–18 at 266%, pregnant applicants at 213% (full-scope) with a second check at 322% for the Medi-Cal Access Program (MCAP), which covers pregnancies just above the full-scope line. A household exactly at the limit still qualifies; $1 over does not.

Medi-Cal counts MAGI income — roughly the income on your tax return. Some income doesn't count toward the limit, including SSI payments and child support you receive.

If you check "age 65+ or with a disability," that person is screened under non-MAGI rules instead of a straight income comparison, since non-MAGI eligibility also depends on an asset test (reinstated January 1, 2026: $130,000 for one person plus $65,000 for each additional household member) that this tool doesn't compute. That result shows as "Needs a non-MAGI check" rather than a pass/fail.

Immigration status note: as of January 1, 2026, undocumented adults 19+ who were not already enrolled in full-scope Medi-Cal can no longer newly enroll in full-scope coverage — restricted-scope coverage (medically necessary emergency services and pregnancy-related care) is what's available to new adult applicants in that group. Effective the same date, long-term care (skilled nursing facility) coverage was also eliminated for undocumented adults 19+, regardless of when they enrolled, except for treatment of an emergency medical condition. Children and pregnant applicants can still get full-scope coverage regardless of immigration status.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who counts in my household for Medi-Cal?

Generally the people on your tax return: you, your spouse, and your tax dependents. A pregnant household member counts as themselves plus the number of babies they're expecting — so a single pregnant applicant with no other dependents is a household of 2 (3 for twins, and so on).

What income counts toward the Medi-Cal limit?

Medi-Cal counts MAGI income (roughly your tax return income) — wages, self-employment income, and similar. Some income doesn't count, including SSI payments and child support you receive.

What if my income is over the Medi-Cal limit?

You may still qualify for subsidized coverage through Covered California, which uses a higher income scale and offers premium tax credits. Use the Covered California Subsidy Calculator to check that separately.

Is there an asset test for Medi-Cal?

Not for the MAGI programs (adults, children, pregnancy) checked by this tool — those are income-only tests. For people 65+ or with a disability, a non-MAGI asset test was reinstated starting January 1, 2026: $130,000 for one person plus $65,000 for each additional household member.

Does immigration status affect Medi-Cal eligibility?

Children 0-18 and pregnant people can get full-scope Medi-Cal regardless of immigration status. But starting January 1, 2026, undocumented adults 19+ who were not already enrolled in full-scope Medi-Cal by December 31, 2025 can no longer enroll in full-scope coverage — restricted-scope coverage (medically necessary emergency services and pregnancy-related care) is what's available to new adult applicants in that group. Effective the same date, long-term care (skilled nursing facility) coverage was also eliminated for undocumented adults 19+, regardless of when they enrolled, except for treatment of an emergency medical condition.
