Limits are 185% of the federal poverty guidelines, on gross income (before taxes). A pregnant applicant can choose to count the expected baby, or babies, in the household size if that helps her qualify. Anyone already on Medi-Cal, CalFresh or CalWORKs meets the income test automatically. WIC also checks for a nutrition risk, such as low iron or underweight, at the first appointment; most applicants meet it.
WIC provides a monthly benefit for healthy foods (fruits and vegetables, milk, whole grains, infant formula and more) on a California WIC card, plus nutrition and breastfeeding support. Immigration status is not asked, and getting WIC doesn't count against anyone in public charge decisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who qualifies for WIC in California?
Pregnant people, mothers up to 6 months after a pregnancy ends (up to a year if breastfeeding), infants and children under 5 who live in California and have household income at or below 185% of the poverty level, $5,088 a month for a family of 4, or who are on Medi-Cal, CalFresh or CalWORKs.
What is the WIC income limit for a family of 3?
$4,212 a month, or $50,542 a year, before taxes, from May 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027.
Does a pregnant woman count as two for WIC?
She can. California WIC lets a pregnant applicant count the unborn baby, or babies, in the household size if she would not qualify at her current size. It is an option, not automatic, so ask for it.
Can I get WIC if I am on Medi-Cal?
Yes. Medi-Cal, CalFresh and CalWORKs enrollment counts as meeting WIC's income test, so you only need to fit one of the WIC categories and have a nutrition risk, which most applicants do.
Do I need to be a U.S. citizen for WIC?
No. WIC does not ask about immigration status, and using WIC is not considered in public charge decisions.
